Proactively Troubleshoot & Fix Citrix Logon Issues & Guarantee a Successful Citrix End User Logon Experience Every Time

Launch Real Sessions with Simulated Users to Test End User Logon Experience & Application Availability

Goliath Logon Simulator for CitrixEnsuring a positive end user experience for XenApp & XenDesktop users has been solved with the Goliath Logon Simulator — the only proactive end user experience software that finds the root cause of Citrix logon issues & resolves them before end users complain.

The Logon Simulator is the only software that simulates the actual process a user goes through, from initiating a connection to launching a Citrix session. This unique approach confirms that the entire Citrix Delivery Infrastructure will work in concert, including the NetScaler, Storefront, Delivery Controller, VDI, and XenApp Server.

The Goliath Logon Simulator for Citrix Overview Video

chris-mielke-drake-university-goliath-technologies“The initial reasons for selecting Goliath Performance Monitor is the rare combination of purpose built functionality for Citrix XenApp 7.6 and XenDesktop 7.6 and technologies not available in other offerings like the Logon Simulator and support for NVIDIA vGPU. However, I found the extensive out-of-the-box reporting capabilities of Goliath Performance Monitor to be invaluable because they give you everything you could possibly need.”

Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop Compatibility

The Goliath Logon Simulator is Citrix Ready Verified to be compatible with:

XenApp 4.5 – 7.8
XenDesktop 5.6 – 7.8

The Goliath Logon Simulator enables a Citrix administrator to simulate the logon process locally, remotely, or in the cloud, generate failure and application/desktop availability alerts, identify the root cause of issues encountered, and troubleshoot and resolve these issues prior to end users being impacted. Much more than a point-in-time testing utility or traditional load testing tool, the Goliath Logon Simulator is a must-have proactive performance management tool for Citrix administrators that can be integrated into the ongoing IT Operations toolset.

When Citrix logon issues occur, they are usually a result of problems in one or more of these three areas:

  • Remote location connection
  • Application and/or desktop availability
  • The Citrix delivery infrastructure including NetScaler, Web Interface/StoreFront, Delivery Controllers, Active Directory, the licensing server, and SQL

The Goliath Logon Simulator facilitates continuous and real-time testing of the Citrix delivery infrastructure, including the NetScaler, by simulating the exact same steps a user would take during the logon process. By launching real sessions with simulated end users the Goliath Logon Simulator provides visibility into all applications and desktops being launched and whether they are succeeding, failing, or slow. This allows the Goliath Logon Simulator to alert the Citrix administrator to a problem the moment it occurs, triggered by the simulated user, not the end user.

If there is a logon failure an administrator will be alerted immediately and be able to pinpoint where the failure occurred and the root cause. In cases where the logon is simply slow, the administrator can see the breakdown of the logon into each of the stages—including group policy, script, and profile loading—in real-time to determine where in the process the slowness occurred.

Proactive, Integrated, and Comprehensive

Proactive

The Logon Simulator is designed to be a 24/7 logon simulation and application testing tool. The low resource impact of the logon simulator allows the technology to be operating at all times as a simulated user or group of users. So, at all times, day or night, the logon simulator will alert the Citrix administrator to end user logon failures or slowness.

Integrated with Performance Monitoring

Goliath Logon Simulator is the only product on the market today that enables a Citrix system administrator to simulate the logon process locally and remotely, generate alerts, identify root cause of issues encountered, troubleshoot and resolve these issues prior to end users being impacted as an integrated part of the ongoing IT Operations toolset rather than a point-in-time testing utility. This is critical because logon and application testing simulations that are integrated into the Performance Monitoring tool set is what offers the ability to not only be alerted to failures or slowness, but determine root cause, resolve, and ultimately prevent issues from happening in the future.

Comprehensive Testing of the Delivery Infrastructure

There are solutions that simulate logons and test applications and many others that monitor key components of the Citrix delivery infrastructure, but these are done separately, which causes most performance issues to go undetected until a user attempts to launch an application. The reason? They are not comprehensive.

Delivering a good end user logon experience requires multiple elements in the IT infrastructure to work in concert. So, the remote connection, the applications and desktop, and individual elements in the application launch process may look fine when monitored or tested separately, but it is the act of executing the integrated launch process by multiple users, including remote access, application, and desktop availability and the Citrix delivery infrastructure that uncovers logon failures, performance issues, and application or desktop access issues.

Comprehensive means logon testing and load testing of the entire Citrix Delivery Infrastructure.

University Healthcare System

Testing to make sure the Citrix XenApp Servers can launch published applications or published desktop sessions

A University Healthcare System uses the Logon Simulator to test XenApp servers only and their ability to launch sessions, which include published application and published desktops only. They test multiple users at once for load testing, as well as logon simulation testing. This will not test the Citrix delivery infrastructure as the simulation is launched directly on the XenApp server and does not go through the NetScaler, Web Interface/Storefront, and Delivery Controller.

Service Provider

Testing the Citrix Delivery Architecture for local and remote users

In this use case, the service provider deploys the logon simulator agent on a server, workstation, or VM at the remote customer location to execute the simulation. The simulator will go through the process of connecting to a Citrix NetScaler or directly to the Citrix Web Interface or StoreFront and then launch the application or desktop session to ensure availability.

Testing in this manner allows the service provider to test and validate 3 main aspects of the logon and session launch process:

  • The workflow to launch an application or desktop session is working
  • Users external to the Citrix architecture can access it successfully
  • Objective evidence of the time it takes for local and remote users to connect, specifically with regard to location specific connection issues and delays. This provides defined data to determine if a location is experiencing longer logon times than others and then perform a logon analysis and produce a report identifying the problem

Troubleshooting an end user’s ability to launch Citrix sessions at home and remote offices

On a case-by-case basis, the logon simulator agent is deployed to a specific end user’s computer, locally or at home/remotely, to test and get hard data on exactly what problems the user is experiencing. The simulator is configured with the end user’s credentials and the application or desktop they are attempting to launch. The administrator puts the logon simulator into “troubleshooting mode” to see the process taking place from the initiation of the session itself, before the user gets brokered into the session. This allows the administrator to:

  • Validate the end user’s claim of how it is failing and appearing
  • Identify where in the process the launch is failing from a technical perspective and not just in terms of how it appears to the end user
  • If the launch is successful, gain objective evidence that it is operator error

Using the Logon Duration Report to identify source of slow logons

Logons were completing, but specific users were experiencing slowness. The Citrix system administrator utilized the logon duration report to breakdown the logon into each of the stages – including group policy, script, and profile loading– in real time to determine where in the process the slowness occurred.

The Goliath Logon Simulator can be purchased with Goliath Performance Monitor or Standalone. Determining root cause of performance issues is greatly enhanced when paired with the Goliath Performance Monitor.
