Challenge

The IT team at Licking Memorial Health System was receiving frequent “Citrix is slow” and “Epic is slow” complaints. They needed a solution to proactively identify and resolve issues affecting the availability, speed, and reliability of Epic, as well as other clinical and business applications. Existing Citrix and third-party tools did not provide sufficient visibility beyond the Citrix environment, into the Epic EHR user experience, or into user behavior that could impact overall performance. That’s when they turned to Goliath.

Solution – Proactive Troubleshooting

A Server Administrator was alerted by Goliath to spikes in memory usage on XenApp servers. Using Goliath, he quickly identified the issue impacting users and resolved it before any support tickets were submitted.

By opening the Views > App Servers tab in Goliath, he immediately saw that most XenApp machines were consuming high amounts of memory.

High memory utilization can cause session slowness and poor server performance, often linked to end-user behavior.

With one click, he determined that Microsoft Edge was the application consuming excessive memory. While browser activity commonly leads to performance issues, the widespread nature of this problem required further investigation.

Navigating to the session display, he identified which users were running Microsoft Edge processes, narrowing down the source of the activity.

Results

Using Goliath to pinpoint the root cause, the team at Licking investigated the high memory usage with Edge and discovered a recent Microsoft 365 patch announcement detailing a memory leak issue.

Knowing that Outlook is widely used, the administrator confirmed that users were experiencing poor performance. He then proactively:

  • Advised affected users of the issue
  • Provided remediation steps
  • Notified users as soon as the issue was resolved

This proactive approach minimized further impact and prevented the issue from spreading.

If you are having end user experience issues with your clinical or business applications reach out and let’s discuss. We find and fix very specific issues and in a discovery conversation we will let you know if we can assist. If the issues you are experiencing are outside our purview, we will share that as well.

Goliath Services Team Prevents Cerner & Citrix Performance Issues from Impacting Clinicians

User Story Banner

Chris Timbers“Goliath Technologies’ gives us complete visibility into the end-user experience from the time they logon to Cerner through their use of the application, in real-time, so we stay ahead of performance issues that can impact our users.” – Chris Timbers, CIO at NorthBay Healthcare

Cerner Millennium, Citrix

Challenge

This story speaks to unique challenges that NorthBay faced and how the Goliath Troubleshooting Services team was able to apply technology and expertise to resolve Cerner Millennium or Citrix logon issues before physicians or clinicians were impacted.

IT Challenges with Cerner Millennium & Citrix that Impact Patient Care

NorthBay IT was faced with the following daily challenges:

Slow logons for Cerner and Citrix: Physicians log on from different locations throughout the hospital and see patients every 20 minutes, so a two-minute delay when trying to access Cerner is too long to wait. Speed of access to these applications is critical to ensuring that time is spent providing healthcare service and not waiting for application sessions to launch.

Delayed identification of Cerner or Citrix performance degradation: Degraded session performance severely impacts the timely delivery of patient care. As a result, it is critical that performance “slowdowns” are identifiedearly, before the ability to deliver services is impacted [Learn more about Goliath Performance Monitor for Hospitals Using Cerner].

Complexity of the Cerner and Citrix Logon Process:The Cerner and Citrix logon process is the primary step to accessing mission-critical applications. It is complex and relies on many components to successfully complete the logon process, making it difficult to troubleshoot without purpose-built technology.

Lack of Visibility: NorthBay healthcare providers primarily utilize the Cerner application via Citrix. This application is hosted by Cerner. NorthBay had visibility into their own infrastructure while Cerner actively monitored application performance in the data center. However, there was no effective end-to-end performance monitoring from the data center to the desktop.

Solution

Goliath Troubleshooting Services

After an exhaustive search to identify a solution for NorthBay’s unique visibility challenges, their team elected to deploy Goliath Performance Monitor and Goliath Application Availability Monitor with out-of-the-box functionality to support Citrix and Cerner.

Implementing Goliath Performance Monitor in just the NorthBay environment was not going to be sufficient in providing the end-to-end visibility that they required. However, because Goliath is the only monitoring technology allowed in the Cerner hosted facility, we were able to provide an industry-only fully integrated solution that encompasses their entire application delivery architecture. Goliath Performance Monitor offered the following capabilities to the administrators and support staff at NorthBay:

  • End-to-end visibility that enables them to have performance and availability metrics from the end-users’ perspective at the hospital location. This data can be trended in real-time and historically.
  • Visibility into both on-premise and Cerner-hosted applications and servers.

Results

Once the product was deployed, NorthBay system administrators had true end-to-end visibility with comprehensive monitoring of both Cerner Millennium and Citrix. They received an in-depth view into the entire user workflow, regardless of location. Goliath’s Cerner and Citrix monitoring capabilities, combined with Cerner’s remote hosting technologies and services, provide NorthBay with advanced warning of potential end-user experience issues and evidence of root cause to resolve and prevent future issues.

To increase visibility across the network, NorthBay also wanted to guarantee that clinical applications would launch when physicians and healthcare workers attempted to log on. Healthcare workers see patients about every 20 minutes, so the applications needed to launch immediately to avoid scheduling delays. Goliath Application Availability Monitor was deployed to proactively log on to applications and alert IT administrators of logon failures or slowness before end users were impacted.

The advantage of having the Goliath solution deployed on-premises, where clinical applications are hosted, is that NorthBay now has complete end-to-end visibility that previously could not have been accomplished. In addition, NorthBay can complement the quality monitoring and management that CernerWorks provides in the hosted facility with their own on-site end-user experience monitoring and management.

Partnerships with Google, IGEL, Cerner, AWS, and Citrix fueled customer acquisition and growth

Philadelphia, PA – January 18, 2022 – Goliath Technologies, a leader in end-user experience monitoring and troubleshooting software for hybrid cloud environments, announced today that they achieved record revenue and customer growth during the calendar year 2021.

“We feel very fortunate that, despite the pandemic, we were able to post another year with high double-digit growth in 2021,” noted Thomas Charlton, Chairman and CEO of Goliath. “Our decision to acquire Cloud Oculus, a SaaS cloud-based monitoring and troubleshooting offering for AWS, Azure, and Google, proved to be critical to our success as organizations continue to migrate workloads to the public cloud.”

Goliath delivers exceptional value in these complex, hybrid multi-cloud environments by proactively identifying the true root cause of performance issues so that our technology partners are not incorrectly identified as the cause of performance issues. The key to Goliath’s value is a combination of embedded intelligence and automation that proactively looks for events, conditions, and failure points in this complicated mesh of technologies and provides IT the telemetry they need to resolve performance issues before they become end-user experience problems.

“I have worked with Goliath for years, and from my perspective their choice to leverage embedded intelligence and automation versus scripting is critical,” noted George Spiers, a Citrix Technology Professional and EUC Architect. “The Goliath product automatically looks for events and conditions that can cause end user issues and then alerts in real time with detailed historical reporting to document and fix permanently. There are not many Citrix experts, so the Goliath product is like adding one to your staff and making the Citrix experts on your staff much more productive because they do not spend time with the tedious work of determining root cause.”

“We had a tremendously productive year from a product perspective,” said Donna Grare, Goliath’s EVP and Chief Technology Officer. “Goliath launched several industry-only features that enable IT departments and executives to finally have an objective measurement of what their end users are experiencing—from the user’s perspective.” This approach changes the historical paradigm of subjective surveys and hearsay to determine how IT is performing relative to meeting user experience service level agreements and industry standards.

Goliath Technologies Announces Enhancements to Goliath Performance Monitor

New Citrix NetScaler Monitoring and VMware Horizon End-User Experience Scorecard

Philadelphia – November 9, 2021 – Goliath Technologies, a leader in end-user experience monitoring and troubleshooting software for hybrid cloud environments, announced today the release of Goliath Performance Monitor 11.9.2. New features include a Citrix NetScaler Module and industry-only VMware Horizon End-User Experience Scorecard.

The new Citrix NetScaler Module adds enhanced monitoring intelligence for Citrix NetScaler (a.k.a. ADC or Application Delivery Controller), expanding the scope of Goliath’s proactive end-user experience monitoring and troubleshooting software. The module enables automatic scanning and identification of performance issues, faults, and errors taking place on the NetScaler.

Critical data is gathered and displayed in monitoring dashboards and troubleshooting views through Goliath’s intelligent Automatic Citrix Discovery and Dependency Map, enabling IT administrators to conduct contextual analysis.  This functionality expedites root cause analysis and identification of performance issues in the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environment. In addition, proactive alerting based on corporate or industry standards can be set to notify IT admins in advance of issues.

“The 11.9.2 release expands on Goliath’s embedded Citrix intelligence and automation, proactively alerting IT admins on NetScaler issues that could impact user experience,” notes Ted Rainey, Senior Director of Product Management at Goliath. “Given the critical Secure Access Gateway role that NetScaler ADC provides in enabling remote access to Citrix environments, this release could not come at a better time. IT Pros are battling to quickly troubleshoot issues and ensure a positive end-user experience with the continued trend of “Work From Anywhere” and the shortage of Citrix experts.”

“NetScaler is the most critical part of any Citrix deployment,” noted Brian Diamond, CEO of LANStatus, a Citrix Platinum partner and Goliath service partner. “Goliath’s unique dependency mapping capability provides much needed visibility into the performance of this component of an end-user computing infrastructure.”

The release also includes enhanced user experience analytics for enterprises utilizing VMware Horizon, such as an industry-only End-User Experience Scorecard. This new feature enables IT decisionmakers to objectively view the quality of end-user experience, instead of relying on subjective feedback or point-in-time surveys. This allows IT teams to report on end-user experience metrics with definitive proof and how they compare to industry best practices.

As Goliath continues to optimize the unified view of end-user experience data across any hybrid landscape using Citrix or VMware delivery systems, IT is well positioned to proactively ensure a trouble-free digital computing experience for remote and mobile workforces, regardless of where the users or workloads are located.
